Looking for New Water Supply Connection in London?

When Do You Need a New Water Supply Connection?

  • New build properties requiring their first water connection
  • Converting a single property into flats — each dwelling needs its own supply
  • Separating from a shared supply pipe to get your own independent connection
  • Extensions or garden annexes requiring a new supply
  • Commercial premises requiring a new or upgraded connection
  • Properties where the existing supply is too small or too old to upgrade

The New Water Connection Process

  • Survey and planning — we inspect your site, advise on the optimal connection point and pipe route, and determine the correct pipe size for your needs.
  • Thames Water application — we submit your application to Thames Water Developer Services on your behalf, including the point of entry drawing and water fittings table.
  • Supply pipe installation — we install the new MDPE supply pipe from your property boundary to your
internal stop valve using trenchless moling where possible.
  • Certification — we issue a Certificate of Works Completed certifying compliance with the Water
Regulations, which is submitted to Thames Water Developer Services.
  • Thames Water connection — Thames Water schedules and completes the final connection to their water main. We re-attend on the connection date to coordinate the final pipework connections.

Pipe Sizing For New Connections

Thames Water and Developer Services specify the minimum pipe size for new connections based on property type and water demand. Standard domestic connections use 25mm MDPE pipe; larger properties, HMOs or commercial premises may require 32mm or larger. We calculate the correct size as part of the application process.

Shared Supply Seperation

Many older London properties are on a shared supply pipe — one pipe serving two or more properties. This creates problems: if one property's supply fails, all are affected, and liability for maintenance is shared. A new independent connection resolves this permanently. We carry out supply separations regularly and can manage the full Thames Water application process.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a new water connection take?

The installation work on your property can typically be completed in one to two days. However, the Thames Water application and approval process takes longer — usually 4-8 weeks from application to connection date. We advise starting the process early in your project timeline.

Who pays for the connection from the mains

Thames Water charge for the connection from their water main to your boundary. Costs vary by connection type and location — Developer Services will provide a quote when you apply. You pay for the supply pipe installation on your property, which we carry out.

Can I have a new connection if I currently have a shared supply

Yes. Moving from a shared supply to an independent connection requires a new connection application through Thames Water Developer Services. We manage this process regularly and can advise on the most cost-effective approach for your situation.
